Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
