Olympians Call on Iran to Stop Execution of Boxing Star

More than twenty Olympic medal winners, trainers and other global sports figures have signed a appeal demanding a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is on death row in the country.

Growing Worldwide Condemnation

During growing worldwide anger over the nation's escalating use of the death penalty as a means of suppression, the forcefully phrased statement denounces the Iranian regime's verdict to confirm the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, 30, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was detained for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in 2019 and indicted of supporting an opposition group. He has spent five years in detention, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.

“Sport is intended to encourage faith, solidarity, and courage,” the supporters wrote. “The death penalty of a champion for his political views is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to any competitor who dares to speak out.

Record of Putting to Death Competitors

The statement pointed out that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and underscored Iran’s history of sentencing to death athletes for their beliefs, including Habib Khabiri, skipper of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a young national sports titleholder, faced the death penalty.

Other supporters to the appeal comprise Tracy Edwards, who captained the first female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the ex- captain of the soccer side an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the country's selection for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was taken into custody in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of state assets”. His sentence has been reversed twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the latest review. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and groups.

Urging to UN

The call to prevent the athlete's capital punishment is subsequent to a previous statement to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by over 100 rights specialists and organizations, calling for action to prevent the sports figure's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

Based on reports, there is an “capital punishment escalation in Iran, which has achieved alarming dimensions”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials put to death at least 853 people – a nearly half surge on the previous year. The year before, records showed nearly a thousand capital punishments, representing the maximum count since 2015. Over hundreds of people have been executed so far in 2025.
