No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
